HUNGER!
Then they said to him, “Lord, whendid we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?” Matthew 25:44 (NIV)
What is it to hunger?
To be starved of the essentials of life?
How must those who suffered in the Holocaust, the sick and dying of Darfur have felt if they had known that while they wasted away, others threw their excess away?
Did they know?
Could they even allow themselves to think such thoughts?
Our scraps could feed a family and yet we throw away so much!
In our greed we demand more instead of less.
Do we really stop to think of the child and their family dying for lack of what we take for granted?
Oh, the injustice of our world that still we do not learn to share!
Starvation eats away at you from the inside out.
Our bodies waste away in their desperate bid to stay alive.
But who cares?
Do I care?
Do you care?
Do we care?
If we were the one starving then we would care.
The boot would be on the other foot then.
Suddenly we would be screaming out; demanding that people would see our plight and help us.
How would we feel if we knew that others see us and pity us in the same way we pity those in Darfur?
What, I hear you cry.
You pity me; what for?
You are starving yourself, but not for food or material goods.
Instead you are dying inside; your spirit is dying.
We in the West, with our telly’s and iPods; our must have mobiles and DVD’s; we see ourselves as rich beyond words.
And yet.....; still we want more.
Our TV’s entice us to desire the latest gadget; bigger, better than the one we have.
How important we will be; our esteem among our peers raised;
With bigger houses, flashier cars, flat screen TV and blackberry phone.
Oh, but here’s the catch, while you have been reading this, your latest gadget is now out of date.
Hurry up; you need to catch up with the Jones’s who are way ahead.
Sorry, but you are too slow; you have fallen too far behind the world around you.
We are judged and found lacking wherever we turn.
There are those who will judge us for our lack of concern.
Others will judge how little we have....;
Compared to them.
Ultimately our judgement will come from God.
How hungry are we for God’s word?
Are we starving for it, or is it just a rumble?
Does our hunger eat us up when we think of Him; of how Jesus gave himself for us?
Is there a hunger that gnaws at our soul; that drives us out to seek to be with Him in the world that we live in?
Can we honestly say that we know what it is to suffer; to feel hunger?
Behold, I see Jesus sitting with the starving child, cradling them in his arms, with tears flowing down his face.
He is gaunt and weak with hunger, but still He reaches out with love to ease the suffering that He sees.
If there is no hunger in us; no starvation that eats at us, can we say that know Jesus?
